To manage and reduce our Green House Gas (GHG) emissions, we first need to know what our current footprint looks like. By identifying carbon hot spots we can then take action to reduce or offset emissions.
To measure a carbon footprint, all sources of emissions within the organisation or project are identified and quantified for a chosen period - usually financial year, or calendar year.
The emissions are categorised into three scopes using the ISO-14064 framework. Every emission source is then given an emission factor to determine the GHG emissions of that particular item, and all of these added up give us the total carbon footprint for the year.
This gives us a base from where we can manage and reduce emissions. ISO-14064 recommends annual reporting to track progress on carbon reduction initiatives.
